Mobility
Please contact the local arrangements committee (Ken Koons and Turk McCleskey) if you need advice about handicap parking or mobility issues at either school. Our contact information is listed on the “Welcome” page.
Parking
Lexington is a nineteenth-century landscape, and parking for twenty-first century automobiles is an issue in town and on both campuses. We recommend that you carpool from your lodgings to reduce the number of cars and facilitate dropping off riders closer to their destinations. As you calculate the travel time from your lodgings to the conference site, be sure to include sufficient time for the driver to park and walk.
On Thursday and Friday, Washington and Lee’s parking deck off Nelson (marked “P” on the Washington and Lee map, where Nelson turns into U.S. 60 West) is the closest large-scale parking facility but space may be limited.
A good alternative to campus parking is in the Rockbridge County Courthouse parking garage, where you can park all day for free; this facility is located about half a mile from the John W. Elrod University Commons, site of registration on Friday, 25 March. Parking in the courthouse parking garage has the advantage of being close to the downtown restaurants, so if you eat downtown after Governor Holton’s presentation on Friday night, you’ll be close to your car. The courthouse parking garage is accessible from Randolph Street between Washington Street and Nelson Street (U.S. 60 West Business). An elevator is available to bring you to the level of Nelson Street. Lexington and the courthouse garage are very safe for pedestrians by day or night.
On Saturday, the VMI parking lots closest to Scott Shipp Hall should be largely available for conference participants, but be advised that driving to those lots is awkward for people coming from the north (the direction of the conference hotels). The easy but longer way is to drive south on Main (U.S. 11 Business) to Letcher Avenue, turn right on Letcher (in front of Washington and Lee), follow Letcher through VMI and past Scott Shipp Hall before turning left and down hill. It’ll be marked.
If mobility is not an issue, on Saturday you will be able to park on Main Street in either direction and walk uphill to Scott Shipp Hall. Be careful of traffic if you do this; it is the sort of risky behavior you would caution new drivers about. If you approach Scott Shipp Hall on foot from Main Street, you will be downhill from a 5-story building. The only elevator can be reached through the right-hand door, and up several steps. (There is a wheelchair lift.)
